Where trust is low, production and time cost are high and communication is misunderstood. Conflict grows when trust is low. This is why leaders must develop a trust culture.
Developing a trust culture begins with the leader saying as simply what they expect of everyone. The more complicated the statements the less they will be understood. The more they are misunderstood the high frustration and conflict will grow. As conflict and frustration grows the cost of production increases as well.
The leader that infuses their culture with genuine enthusiasm along with a positive outlook on the future will grow a culture of trust. Telling your people to trust is not enough; you must trust people to grow trust.
As a culture of trust grows production and time cost will decrease. As you develop trust as a culture conflict between people on your team will decrease.
Be Trustable and your people will follow.

As a new leader you are granted trustability to some degree. This is determined by your past and the past of the organization. If you past is a full of events where you fulfilled your word than a high level of trust will be granted to you. If you are brand new as a leader with no past, most people will grant you a “trust credit”. You will increase or decrease your “trust credit”.
If the organization you are leading has a history of untrustworthy leaders you will be viewed through the lens of previous leaders. Just continue to press forward and you will gain trustability and be trusted.
Once your people begin to see that you can be trusted than your enthusiasm and optimism of the future will begin to accepted and bought into.
One caution before I go, though it takes a day-by-day process to gain trustability, it only takes a moment to lose trustability. Keep you word and think before you speak.

There are two primary task that every leader must accomplish prior to their people catching the vision of the future. These two task must be maintained for their people to remain committed to the vision.
1.) Every leader must be a trustable person. Those that follow you do so primarily because they trust you. It is after they trust you that they believe and commitment themselves to your vision. Be a Trustable leader!
2.) Every leader must come to the position of leader with great Optimism for the vision and endeavor. Without optimism there is no reason to commit to the work and energy that it takes to fulfill the vision. The leader must create a vision taht they are 100% enthusiastic and filled with optimism about.

All good success has two aspects to it, adversity and a strong commitment. The larger the success the greater the adversity will be and your commitment will need to be stronger.

Progress, moving forward, character growth comes with opposition and failures. It is the struggle to continue with the spirit of learning that grows you. Continue moving forward.
Settle in as a learner
Decide and accept that you do not know everything (btw no body does) and become a learner from the successes and failures of the endeavor you are leading.
Transfer
Delegate what you are not DNA’d (designed naturally to achieve) to competent team members. If you are a one-person team, then reach out to others.
Establish an “R & D” department
Find a team of people (3 or 5) that will be the “Responsibility and Direction” team. They will detail the functions that need to happen for success.
Position
Place yourself in subjection to a clear and compelling purpose and vision directive and allow it to carry the weight of the endeavor.
Satisfy
Satisfy your GPA (gifts, passions, and abilities) as you lead.

This past Sunday (July 10, 2011) I traveled to Nashville and the Gaylord’s Opryland Hotel for the Annual National Conference for School Nutrition. The trip began in Sacramento to change planes in San Diego and on the Nashville.
While awaiting the departure from San Diego to Nashville I met a man that will live in my minds eye from now on. I was sitting half watching people and the women’s soccer team advance to the semi finals, and then I saw Mike.
Mike walked across the terminal with determination and strength of character and a big grin. He was headed to get a drink and watch some of the game. After he ordered his drink and eventually found a chair to sit in is when I noticed? It was as he hopped up on the tall chair and leaned on the small counter top. He is a double amputee.
I watched him for a few minutes and then walked over and began a conversation with him. Yes, I asked him how long he had been as he is now. Mike, with no hesitation and a smile answered me “since 2001”.
He began to tell me how that one day at work in the San Jose area of California his legs were hurting and aching a bit. He ignored it for a while, and eventually went to see the doctor about the pain and discomfort a few days later.
He later discovered that he had a rare aggressive infection/decease that would result in losing both his legs to save his life. Mike is grateful to be alive and gets around in an amazing fashion today. Yet it took some getting used to and getting through and over some issues.
He had to get over the “why me” questioning. Through the conversation he told me that the way he did get over that debilitating “why me” questioning was to focus on the fact that he is alive and begin to enjoy his “NOW”!
The next thing he worked through was how to regain his independence. This meant prostatic legs and learning to walk all over again. Because he desperately desired his independence he endured the pain. Mike told me the pain of being trapped by his legs was a greater pain than learning to walk with his prostatic legs.
Finally he laughed and said that he had to get used to the intense pat down or rub down (as he put it) while traveling through airports. They get real personal with him in security. The entire time we talked he smiled and laughed.
Life; is meant to be lived with smiles and laughter. Incidents do not have the power to trap you in despair and anguish, only your choice does. Decide now to live. Put a smile on and get out there and laugh out loud more than you have.
Thanks Mike for your influence on me.

The endeavor that you have set out to accomplish is a worth task that is energized by high values, honor, and integrity. Do not allow it to be manipulated by your whims and moods.
If you are not careful your own whims and moods with highjack and hold hostage your great endeavor. The only way to prevent this from happening is to stay focused on your “PFE” (purpose for existing). Write it down, say it often, post it in many places. Your PFE is your due north!
Your whims and moods are sinister and can not for relied on to accomplish your endeavors PFE. Revisit your original purpose often and ask the following three questions.
When the answer to question one is a resounding YES, then the answers to questions 2 and 3 will always be to adjust towards number one.
Enjoy the journey; I am Matt your friend. When there is anything I can do to help you discover your best, just ask. You can reach me at matt@onthemoveforward.com with all you questions, thoughts, and points of view.
